In a recent update, Ukraine stated that Russian casualties in the past 24 hours alone amounted to 740 fighters.

This marked an increase in the overall number of Russian casualties, as per Ukraine’s figures, which now stands at 382,110—an increase of over 5,000 fighters within the past seven days.

It’s worth noting that neither Russia nor Ukraine officially publishes their own casualty figures.

Moscow’s Defense Ministry does not provide an ongoing count of Ukrainian casualties but claimed that Kyiv had lost over 800 troops in a single day.

Russia also asserted that Ukraine had lost more than 14,800 tanks and other armored vehicles, along with 7,887 field artillery systems.

Prolonged Conflict

These figures highlight the enduring toll of nearly two years of conflict on both Moscow and Kyiv, with no immediate resolution in sight.

Challenges in Assessing Casualties

Assessing casualties in an ongoing conflict is a challenging task, as both sides tend to keep such data confidential and may inflate the numbers of adversary casualties, as noted by Marina Miron, a postdoctoral researcher at King’s College London.

The British Defence Ministry reported that the average number of Russian casualties per day increased by almost 300 throughout 2023 compared to the previous year.

This reflects the changing dynamics within Russia’s armed forces.

Projection for 2024

If Russia continues to sustain casualties at the same rate in 2024, the British Defence Ministry estimates that Moscow could have more than 500,000 casualties by 2025.

Concerns About Recruits

Reports from the BBC’s Russian service and independent outlet Mediazona indicated that civilian recruits who joined the Russian military since February 2022 constituted nearly half of the country’s current combat losses.

These recruits are often deployed with outdated equipment.

Frontline Challenges

Ukraine’s Defense Minister, Rustem Umerov, highlighted the ongoing challenges along the front lines, stating that Russia loses approximately 400 soldiers for every square kilometer of land exchanged in the conflict.
