US Marine Veteran Paul Whelan Allegedly Assaulted in Russian Prison, Family Reports

Paul Whelan, a former U.S. Marine veteran who has been incarcerated in Russia for several years on what critics consider false charges, was reportedly assaulted by another prisoner on Tuesday, according to his family. David Whelan, his brother, stated that the assault occurred at a labor camp where Paul was working at a sewing table.

The incident began when a new inmate blocked part of the production line, and Paul requested that the inmate move. David Whelan explained that “After repeated requests, the prisoner hit Paul in the face, breaking Paul’s glasses in the process, and attempted to hit him a second time.”

Fortunately, other prisoners intervened and prevented further harm.

Paul Whelan, concerned about future attacks, has sought permission from the prison warden to speak with local prosecutors regarding the assault.

David Whelan expressed his brother’s worry, stating that “He is also concerned that these sorts of attacks can occur any time and, due to the various sharp implements in the workshop including the shears the other prisoner was holding today, could escalate into a far more serious attack.”

Additionally, he noted that anti-American sentiment among other inmates makes his brother a target merely because of his nationality.

In response to the incident, the U.S. State Department has expressed its concern. A spokesperson stated, “We are concerned about reports that Paul Whelan was assaulted by another prisoner in IK-17 on November 28.”

The State Department has been in contact with Paul and has been informed that he is receiving medical treatment for his injuries. They have called on Russia to release Whelan and ensure the safety and fair treatment of all detained U.S. citizens.

In December 2018, Whelan was arrested and accused of espionage and spying for the U.S. government. He was subsequently sentenced to 16 years in prison.

Both Whelan and the U.S. vehemently deny the charges. Whelan, who is currently serving his sentence in a labor camp in the Mordovia republic of Russia, was not included in a prisoner exchange between the U.S. and Russia last year.

It is worth noting that during his arrest, Whelan was staying at a hotel in the Moscow area while attending a wedding and acting as a travel guide for the groom’s family. Russian officials claimed that he had received a USB drive with classified material from an unnamed Russian citizen.

The incident brings attention to the ongoing plight of Paul Whelan and the concerns surrounding his safety and well-being in Russian custody.
