Vatican Reiterates Stance Against Gender Theory, Gender-Affirming Surgeries, and Surrogate Motherhood

On Monday, the Vatican’s doctrinal office issued a sweeping declaration that reinforces its conservative stance on several social and ethical issues, including gender theory, gender-affirming surgeries, and surrogate parenthood, alongside its long-standing opposition to abortion and euthanasia.

Titled “Dignitas infinita” (infinite dignity), the document emerges amid intense debate within the Church, particularly after the Vatican’s recent, more welcoming approach to same-sex couples.

It marks the culmination of five years of drafting and revisions, influenced by global church feedback and specific requests from Pope Francis to broaden its scope.

Approved by Pope Francis, the declaration extends beyond the initial topics to include issues such as poverty, migration, human trafficking and violence against women.

This expansion reflects the Pope’s holistic view of human dignity and his advocacy for a globally inclusive Church.

The document calls surrogate motherhood an affront to the dignity of mankind, echoing previous remarks by the Pope where he condemned it as “despicable” and advocated for its global prohibition.

Addressing gender theory, the declaration critiques the concept of gender as a personal choice or construct, labeling such beliefs as contrary to the divine gift of life.

It equates the pursuit of gender self-determination to a challenge against the natural order as ordained by God.

The document states, “…desiring a personal self-determination, as gender theory prescribes, apart from this fundamental truth that human life is a gift, amounts to a concession to the age-old temptation to make oneself God, entering into competition with the true God of love revealed to us in the Gospel.”

The Vatican maintains its critical stance on gender-affirming surgeries, arguing that such procedures threaten the “unique dignity” bestowed from conception.

However, it recognizes surgeries to correct genital abnormalities without classifying them as gender changes.

In a nod to more progressive views, the declaration condemns the unjust treatment of individuals based on sexual orientation, including imprisonment and violence, recognizing these acts as violations of human dignity.

Reiterating traditional Church teachings, the text strongly opposes abortion, euthanasia, and the death penalty, drawing on teachings from previous Popes and doctrinal history to bolster its arguments.

The document also notes that sexual abuse is pervasive in society and within the Church itself.

It discusses social evils like violence against women and cyberbullying and emphasizes the Church’s concern over these widespread threats to human dignity.

As the Vatican articulates its positions, the document is poised to ignite discussions both within and outside the Church’s global community, reflecting ongoing tensions between traditional doctrinal positions and contemporary societal changes.

The comprehensive nature of “Dignitas infinita” suggests a continued commitment by the Church to influence ethical debates worldwide.
