Grainy webcam footage from local sources captured the eruption’s dramatic start.

The volcano began with a bright flash of light illuminating the sky at 22:17 local time.

Magma Spewing

As the eruption progressed, magma was observed spewing along the ridge of a nearby hill. Magma is semi molten rock that resides deep beneath the earth’s surface.

The eruption’s magma flow is estimated to be at least a hundred cubic meters per second. This indicates that the volcanic eruption was quite a significant event for the area.

Vidir Reynisson, head of Iceland’s Civil Protection and Emergency Management, explained the magnitude of the eruption. He said “The magma flow seems to be at least a hundred cubic meters per second, maybe more. So this would be considered a big eruption in this area at least,”

In November, Grindavik’s residents were evacuated due to heightened seismic activity. This had caused damage to homes and raised fears of an impending eruption.

Iceland, located above a volcanic hot spot in the North Atlantic, experiences eruptions approximately every four to five years.

The 2010 eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano caused widespread disruptions, grounding flights across Europe due to concerns of ash damaging airplane engines.

Scientists predict that the recent eruption is likely to produce lava rather than an ash cloud.

Iceland’s foreign minister, Bjarne Benediktsson, assured that flights to and from Iceland remain unaffected. He said that international flight corridors are open.

A coast guard helicopter is scheduled to determine the eruption’s exact location and size while measuring gas emissions.
