Wisconsin Bipartisan Commission Charges Trump PAC with Campaign Finance Violations

Wisconsin’s bipartisan ethics commission has dealt a significant blow to a political action committee (PAC) supporting Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.

The commission has recommended criminal charges against the Save America PAC for allegedly attempting to bypass campaign finance laws in support of a challenger to an anti-Trump Republican.

The bipartisan ethics commission in Wisconsin has released a report detailing allegations against the Save America PAC.

The report focuses on accusations that the PAC unlawfully contributed funds to the campaign of Adam Steen, who challenged Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos in 2022.

The rift between Donald Trump and Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos emerged following Vos’s assertion that there was no viable path to decertify the 2020 presidential election results.

Trump, contesting the outcome, accused Vos of blocking efforts to address alleged voter fraud.

The bipartisan ethics commission, evenly split between Democrats and Republicans, has found “probable cause” that the Save America PAC engaged in unlawful activities.

Commission Chair Pat Strachota, a Republican, signed off on the recommendation for charges against the PAC.

The commission alleges that the Save America PAC attempted to circumvent campaign finance laws by directing funds exceeding individual donation limits (which are $1,000 as per Wisconsin law) to Adam Steen’s campaign.

The PAC purportedly routed contributions worth at least $40,000 through local county parties, intending for these funds to benefit Steen’s candidacy.

According to documents reviewed and reported on by Newsweek, the Save America PAC allegedly provided $5,000 contributions to three different local Republican county parties, earmarked for Steen’s campaign.

The commission contends that these actions violated state statutes governing campaign finance.

While the commission did not identify specific individuals to face charges, it emphasized that the PAC’s “agents” were responsible for alleged violations of campaign finance laws.

Local district attorneys have initiated investigations into the matter.

“Based on the discussions before the donation was made, it appears that the Respondent directed the county parties to use the money, directly or indirectly, for the benefit of Friends of Adam Steen. The county parties did so either through direct contributions to Friends of Adam Steen or through disbursements to vendors. This is a violation of WIS. STAT. § 11.1202(2),” the documents read.

Despite efforts to unseat Robin Vos, he emerged victorious in the 2022 Republican primary, defeating Adam Steen by 260 votes.

Vos secured a comfortable victory in the general election, triumphing over both a Democratic challenger and Steen’s write-in campaign.

In a statement endorsing Adam Steen, Donald Trump criticized Robin Vos as a “RINO” (republican in name only) who “consistently blocked efforts at conducting a full cyber forensic audit of the 2020 election.”

He added, “He does not come close to supporting America First policies, and I do not come close to supporting him,.”

Although Vos voiced concerns about the integrity of the 2020 election, he ultimately refrained from decertifying the results.

This decision drew criticism from Trump-aligned conservatives, underscoring the contentious nature of Wisconsin’s political landscape.
