Legal Aide to New York AG Letitia James May Face Charges of Criminal Tampering

An aide to New York Attorney General Letitia James, Assistant Attorney General Stacey Hamilton, is potentially facing a charge of misdemeanor related to an incident involving alleged vandalism.

Reports suggest Hamilton may be charged with third-degree criminal tampering following an incident in November, where she is accused of damaging a neighbor’s car with an unidentified liquid.

The case, which has garnered attention due to Hamilton’s position within an office known for its high-profile investigations, including those against former President Donald Trump, is said to be based on a personal dispute rather than related to Hamilton’s professional duties.

Despite the serious allegations, Hamilton has vocally denied any wrongdoing, challenging the validity of the charges and the integrity of the investigation.

Court filings reveal the neighbor’s complaint stemmed from an incident on November 16, alleging that Hamilton’s actions caused damage to the car’s paint.

Kevin Gagan, Hamilton’s lawyer, contends that the complaint was motivated by a desire to retaliate against Hamilton for a separate altercation involving the complainant’s girlfriend, who is reportedly facing assault charges.

Gagan has also suggested that the pursuit of charges against Hamilton may be influenced by internal politics within the Albany County District Attorney’s office, a claim the office has categorically denied.

Hamilton herself has criticized the handling of her case, pointing to the necessity for further investigation and cautioning against the dissemination of misleading information.

Her court appearance, initially scheduled for this past Tuesday, has been postponed to April 17.

Should Hamilton be formally charged and found guilty of third-degree criminal tampering, the repercussions could include a jail sentence of 90 days or less.

The unfolding situation places Hamilton in a precarious position, balancing the defense of her personal actions against the backdrop of her significant role within the New York Attorney General’s office.
