The United Kingdom has assumed control of NATO’s rapid reaction military force, and in doing so, has issued a direct warning to Russia.
Deterring Russian Aggression
Grant Shapps, the United Kingdom Secretary of State for Defense, conveyed the message, emphasizing the importance of standing with allies and deterring any aggression from Russia.
Standing with Allies
Shapps underscored the significance of supporting allies, especially as the Ukraine conflict approaches its second anniversary. He expressed determination not to allow Russian President Vladimir Putin to claim victory in the war. Shapps also referenced recent threats made by Russia toward Finland, a new NATO member.

Russia’s Warning to Finland
Russia’s representative to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, had warned Finland, expressing concern that if there were any escalation in the region, they would be the first to suffer due to their proximity to Russia and NATO.
UK’s Preparedness
Shapps assured that UK troops are fully armed and prepared to respond if Putin were to attempt a major offensive. He highlighted the United Kingdom’s military capabilities, ranking fifth globally, and emphasized the readiness of their soldiers and advanced equipment.
NATO’s Defensive Stance
Shapps clarified NATO’s position, stating that the alliance does not pose any threat to Russia and has no territorial ambitions. However, he emphasized that NATO member countries would defend each other in the event of an attack.

UK’s Leading Role in NATO
The United Kingdom’s leadership in NATO’s Very High Readiness Joint Task Force for 2024 signifies its commitment to global defense responsibilities as NATO celebrates its 75th year. Shapps asserted that the UK plays a central role within NATO.
Challenges Faced by UK’s Military
General Sir Tim Radford, one of the UK’s top generals, acknowledged the challenges facing the British army as it copes with a reduction in armed forces from 97,000 to 76,000. Radford highlighted the increased global threats.
Russian Nuclear Capabilities
Shapps referred to Russian Space Agency head Yury Borisov’s remarks about Russia’s nuclear rocket, Satan-2, being ready for launch. Borisov had suggested that this missile, with its long-range capability, could potentially devastate the UK in a matter of minutes.
