Migrants Sneak Into New Mexico Middle School, Prompting Lockdown

Illegal migrants hiding on the premises of a middle school in New Mexico sparked panic among educators and parents.

Gadsden Independent School District Superintendent Travis Dempsey described two recent incidents, occurring within a week of each other, as “concerning” disruptions to the educational process.

With undocumented immigrants entering New Mexico reaching nearly 45,000 cases in the last five months, the region’s safety and security has come under threat.

More than ten thousand incidents happened in February itself, marking a significant rise from the previous month and the highest since the start of the fiscal year.

The first of the two incidents occurred on March 20, followed by another just a week later.

The second incident led to the campus being placed in “secure mode” for about 20 minutes. Six undocumented immigrants were arrested in the process.

Superintendent Dempsey expressed his concern over these occurrences interrupting the school’s educational activities.

The school worked in collaboration with the Sunland Park Police Department and Border Patrol to address the situation.

During the first incident, the school principal had to use a “rave panic button” from a K-12 school safety app to report suspicious activity.

The school was immediately secured, and an alert was sent to the community.

The response from law enforcement was praised by the district for maintaining the safety of staff and children.

Customs and Border Protection officials confirmed the apprehension of migrants near the school the morning following the second incident.

They attributed the security measures to attempts by migrants not to get arrested.

With the Mexico border so close to Sunland Park, migrants often hide within properties in the area.

This situation has understandably caused anxiety among parents, with concerns raised about the potential actions of frightened migrants near students.
