New York Democrat Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, responded to President Joe Biden being called “Genocide Joe” by progressive activists on Sunday, highlighting the discontent among young people.
Young People’s Concerns
During an interview with NBC host Kristen Welker, Ocasio-Cortez was asked about the use of the term “genocide” in reference to President Biden’s stance on recent events.
Deeply Disturbed
She emphasized that young people are deeply disturbed by the violence and the significant loss of life.
Ocasio-Cortez pointed out that the crisis extends beyond the reported 25,000 deaths in Gaza, including widespread starvation and the displacement of over 2 million Gazans.
Recent ICJ Hearing
She also mentioned a recent ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which stated that Israel has a grave responsibility to prevent genocide.
Status of Genocide Determination
Welker inquired whether it has been officially classified as a genocide.
“I believe they are still determining it,” Ocasio-Cortez responded, “but in the interim ruling, the fact that they said there’s a responsibility to prevent it.”
Mass Inhumanity
She continued, “The fact that this word is even in play. The fact that this word is even in our discourse, I think demonstrates the mass inhumanity that Gazans are facing.”
Biden’s Position as the Democratic Nominee
When asked about Biden’s strength as a candidate to face Donald Trump, Ocasio-Cortez referred to the recent New Hampshire primary, where Biden had a significant turnout even though he wasn’t on the ballot.
She indicated that he is essentially the Democratic nominee.
Biden Campaign Outreach
Welker inquired about whether the Biden campaign has reached out to Ocasio-Cortez regarding campaigning for the 2024 election.
Commitment To Biden
“We’ve been in contact with the Biden administration throughout my term and throughout his term as well,” Ocasio-Cortez responded.
She emphasized her commitment to supporting people’s movements across the country.
Protesters Interrupt Biden’s Speech
During an abortion rights rally in Manassas, Virginia, President Biden faced multiple interruptions from protesters critical of his administration’s handling of the conflict in Gaza.
How Many Have You Killed?
One protester, holding a Palestinian flag, shouted, “How many kids have you killed?” The protester was escorted out while the crowd chanted “four more years.”
