Retired Chinese Admiral Stresses Vigilance in Dealings with the U.S.

A retired Chinese navy rear admiral, Yang Yi, has emphasized the need for China to be prepared for various scenarios in its relationship with the United States.

Speaking at an annual forum hosted by China’s state-owned Global Times newspaper, Yang highlighted the importance of being strong and powerful to safeguard national interests and deter potential provocations.

His remarks come amid recent diplomatic efforts to thaw tensions between the two superpowers, including a high-level video call between U.S. General Charles Brown Jr. and PLA General Liu Zhenli.

Yang Yi stressed the importance of readiness and preparation for various scenarios in China’s interactions with the United States. He asserted that maintaining a position of strength would deter actions that could harm national interests.

Yang made these remarks during an annual forum hosted by China’s Global Times newspaper, where he shared his insights on China-U.S. relations and the need for vigilance.

General Charles Brown Jr., chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, engaged in a video call with PLA General Liu Zhenli on December 21, marking a significant military-to-military dialogue. This dialogue followed a period of strained relations and limited cooperation since July 2022, prompted by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s high-profile trip to Taiwan.

Shared Commitment to Restart Talks

During a summit in San Francisco in November, President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping committed to restarting talks between their militaries. Concerns had arisen over frequent encounters in the Indo-Pacific region, heightening the risk of accidents or misunderstandings.

General Brown emphasized the importance of responsible competition management and open communication between the two nations to prevent miscalculations. He advocated substantive dialogue to reduce misunderstandings.

PLA General Liu urged military talks based on equality and respect to stabilize and improve bilateral ties. China’s embassy in Washington, D.C., stressed the need for the U.S. to have the right perception of China and respect its core interests and concerns.

Taiwan as an Internal Affair

China reiterated its stance on Taiwan, labeling it a purely internal matter with no room for external interference. The statement also emphasized respect for China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights in the South China Sea. 

South China Sea Dispute
